Objectives & Work Packages

  • Objective 1: Collect data and develop novel, evidence-based methods and models to assess the impact of lighting on health
    • Urban Lighting and Health multiscale platform - a WebGIS-based multilevel platform presents evidence on the impact of lighting policies, both indoor and outdoor, on people’s health and wellbeing. The ENLIGHTENme Platform will be consist of three different components: The ENLIGHTENme open Atlas, the Urban Lighting and health maps and the Multiscale 3D urban model.
    • Innovative clinical methods/protocols to assess the impact of electric light on circadian rhythms (CR) entrainment and personal health in elderly populations.
    • Evidence-based lighting-dependent risk and effects model, based on the effect sizes reported in response to the light intervention, to assess the multi-dimensional variable sensitivity in target samples.
    • Health rating system of personal sensitivity to electric light exposure identifies a set of rating categories for profiling different subgroups of population sensitive to electric light exposure.
    • Urban Lighting Labs to co-design and assess impacts of year-long, real-world lighting installations through qualitative research and community engagement.
  • Objective 2: Provide recommendations, guidelines and decision-making support on smart urban lighting good practices
    • Recommendations on light hygiene to different profiled subgroups of population sensitive to electric light on how to employ light to help prevent circadian rhythm-associated chronic diseases.
    • Smart Healthy Lighting System to regulate outdoor lighting according to its impact on health and wellbeing.
    • Healthy Urban Lighting Good Practice Guidelines provide urban good practices that incorporate the concerns about citizen health and wellbeing into lighting policy and implementation measures to support policy decision makers.
    • ENLIGHTENme Decision Support System (DSS) supports policy makers in defining intervention priorities according to urban inequalities, which account for cost effectiveness at the urban level and enable them to compare the impacts of different lighting scenarios functional to lighting plans.
    • Policy briefs summarise ENLIGHTENme main findings on different domains (socio-economic aspects, cost-effectiveness, health and wellbeing, Smart Outdoor Lighting Systems, seasonal clock changes, etc...).
  • Objective 3: Create awareness and promote knowledge sharing
    • City Health Manager training programme, introduces a two-part training programme that focuses on the impact of light on health and wellbeing for an innovative transdisciplinary role within public administrations. The training programme aims to put this topic on the agenda of decision makers and key stakeholders, as well as create awareness for the broader population.
    • “Lighting up city life” campaign: creation of an awareness raising campaign that provides tips on how to reduce adverse lighting-related health and wellbeing effects, like reorganising light in homes and recommending behaviour changes.

The ENLIGHTENme project activities are managed in so-called work packages. The three phases of the project are implemented and supported by six such work packages. Different partners take the lead on achieving different tasks within a particular work package while ensuring close collaboration with other institutions and across the different work packages.
